Critical Reception: Reviews of the 1966 Edition
In 1966, Trumpeter was republished with new illustrations. Once again, the published reviews were highly favorable. Pond (1966) wrote in The Christian Science Monitor, “Happily, the book is now being reissued, complete with woodcut-style illustrations by Janina Domanska…. Children should be forewarned against the dangers of sequestration. Any parent who once lays hands on the book is unlikely to give it back until he himself has read it cover to cover.” And in a New York Times piece about historical fiction for young people, published the following year, Jacobs (1967) described Trumpeter as “unusually well conceived and executed…. It is rich, engrossing fair. But ‘Trumpeter’s’ contribution, still unique in children’s literature, stems from total immersion in the culture and political destiny of Poland, even to a concluding invocation — “May God Save Poland” — drawn from that country’s national anthem.”
